URWERK UR-202S AlTiN
Hammerhead Full Metal Jacket
Limited Edition of 50 Pieces
Overview
Introduced in 2011, the URWERK UR-202S AlTiN Hammerhead Full Metal Jacket represents one of the most technically ambitious executions of the UR-202 platform. Produced in a limited series of 50 pieces, this version combines a fully integrated metal bracelet with one of URWERK’s most complex satellite time displays.
The Hammerhead takes its name from the sculptural case form and its distinctive horizontal profile. In this configuration, the watch is presented as a complete metal construction, with case and bracelet forming a continuous architectural object.
The bracelet was developed in collaboration with Maspoli, a specialist in high-end metal bracelets since 1951. Each bracelet is composed of 22 links, of which only a small number are identical, reflecting a level of construction and finishing rarely seen in series production.
Case and Material
The UR-202S is executed in a combination of steel and titanium, treated with AlTiN coating.
This surface treatment produces a matte black finish with high resistance to wear and corrosion. The result is a subdued, technical appearance that reinforces the industrial character of the watch.
The designation “S” refers to the striped dial structure, where vertical relief lines add depth and differentiate the model within the UR-202 family.
Telescopic Satellite Time Display
The UR-202 introduced a significant evolution of URWERK’s satellite complication.
Three orbiting hour satellites carry telescopic minute hands that extend and retract as they move across the dial. The minute display is divided into three sectors:
• 0 to 14
• 15 to 44
• 45 to 60
Each telescopic hand adjusts its length precisely as it travels through these sectors, allowing the time to be displayed across a wide arc while maintaining a compact case.
When extended, the minute hands measure approximately 4.8 mm. When retracted, they reduce to 1.8 mm, preserving wearability without compromising legibility.
Carousel and Transport System
At the centre of the display is the carousel, responsible for driving both the rotation of the hour satellites and the telescopic minute hands.
This component is manufactured to extremely tight tolerances, with critical elements produced within a margin of just a few microns. After machining, the carousel is manually adjusted and treated to reduce friction and improve durability.
The telescopic function is controlled by precision transporters. Each follows a cam calculated from hundreds of reference points, ensuring that the minute hand extends and retracts with exact timing as it crosses the dial.
Dial Indications
The dial integrates additional information within its layered architecture:
• moon phase indicator
• day and night indicator
These complications are positioned within the structure of the satellite display, maintaining a balance between functionality and visual clarity.
Twin Turbine Winding System
Turning the watch over reveals one of URWERK’s defining technical features.
The caseback incorporates twin turbines connected to the automatic winding system. These act as air resistance regulators, controlling the speed of the rotor during movement.
A three position selector allows the wearer to adjust the behaviour of the winding system:
• free rotation
• reduced winding speed
• rotor stopped completely
This system helps protect the movement from unnecessary wear during periods of high activity.
The Full Metal Bracelet
The Full Metal Jacket configuration introduces a fully integrated titanium bracelet developed with Maspoli.
Each bracelet requires multiple stages of manufacturing and finishing, with every component produced in house by the supplier. The construction emphasises both durability and refinement, extending the mechanical identity of the watch beyond the case itself.
Creator Thoughts
Felix Baumgartner
“The UR-202 was a watch of many firsts for URWERK. It introduced our in house turbine system and telescopic hands, and the 202S was the first to be fitted with a full metal bracelet.
The development was demanding, but it pushed our engineering further than before. The AlTiN version, with its matte black finish, expresses the URWERK identity very clearly.”
Martin Frei
“Since the beginning, our watches were paired with leather straps, creating a contrast between traditional material and modern design.
With the UR-202S we explored a fully metal construction. The result is a more substantial object, where the bracelet becomes part of the overall architecture of the watch.”
Rarity
Limited to 50 pieces, the UR-202S AlTiN Hammerhead Full Metal Jacket stands as one of the most complex and distinctive watches within the URWERK catalogue.
